Keeping You Covered

We know how hard it can be to keep track of your bank account transactions. Sometimes there isn’t enough money to cover a charge, and overdrafts and their associated fees can occur. Bank of South Texas offers overdraft protection options that can help protect you from returned items and denials, and give you the peace of mind that comes with knowing you’re covered.

What You Need to Know about Overdrafts and Overdraft Fees

An overdraft occurs when you do not have enough money in your account to cover a transaction, but we pay it anyway.

We can cover your overdrafts in two different ways:

  • We have standard overdraft practices that come with your account.
  • We also offer overdraft protection plans, such as the link to a savings account, which may be less expensive than our standard overdraft practices. To learn more, ask us about these plans.

What are the standard overdraft practices that come with my account?

We do authorize and pay overdrafts for the following types of transactions:

  • Checks and other transactions made using your checking account number
  • Automatic bill payments

We do not authorize and pay overdrafts for the following types of transactions unless you ask us too:

  • ATM transactions
  • Everyday debit card transactions

We pay overdrafts at our discretion, which means we do not guarantee that we will always authorize and pay any type of transaction.
If we do not authorize to pay an overdraft, your transaction will be declined.

What fees will I be charged if Bank of South Texas pays my overdraft?

Under our standard overdraft practices:

  • We will charge you a fee of up to $35 each time we pay an overdraft.
  • We charge no more than 7 fees per business day when a transaction tries to post to your account and you do not have enough money to cover it.

We do not charge an overdraft fee for items that we pay that are in the amounts of $5.00 or less.

How can I avoid overdraft fees?

The best way to avoid overdraft fees is to never spend more than what is in your account. Keep track of your available balance. Be sure to allow ample time for your checks to clear, and don’t forget about automatic payments or deductions. Your deposits may not be processed immediately, and overdrafts may occur while deposits are pending or on hold.
